You've found the dress. Maybe it's fresh off the rack, maybe it's your mother's, maybe it arrived in a box from overseas and looked nothing like the photos once you tried it on. Whatever the story, there's a good chance it doesn't fit — not yet, anyway. That's completely normal. Almost no wedding dress fits perfectly the moment it comes off the hanger, and that's not a flaw in the dress or in you — it's just how bridal gowns work. They're made to a size chart, and you're not a size chart. This is where alterations come in, and it's worth understanding what's involved before your first fitting, so you can walk in feeling prepared instead of anxious.

Why Every Wedding Dress Needs a Specialist

A wedding dress isn’t like altering a work blazer or taking up a pair of trousers. You’re working with boning, layers of tulle, delicate lace, beading, and fabrics that don’t forgive a mistake.
Boning is a good example of why this work needs real expertise. Most structured gowns rely on it to hold their shape through the bodice, and it isn’t a one-size-fits-all material — we work with rigilene, plastic, and steel boning, each suited to a different level of structure and support. Get it wrong, and a bodice can pucker, dig in, or lose its shape entirely. Not every tailor has worked with all three, which is exactly why bridal alterations call for someone who handles this kind of construction every single day, not just now and then.

Always take your wedding dress to a bridal alteration specialist. It’s the difference between a dress that’s technically altered and a dress that feels like it was made for you.

What Actually Gets Altered

Every bride is different, and every dress needs something different. The most common alterations we see include:

Taking in or letting out the bodice for a fit that follows your shape without pulling or gaping
Hemming adjusting length for your shoes and height, especially important once you’ve chosen your footwear
Adding a bustle so your train lifts cleanly for the reception
Reshaping straps or sleeves comfort matters as much as look, especially for a day this long
Taking in the waist or hips for a silhouette that sits naturally
A shoulder lift a common adjustment for brides with a shorter torso, so the bodice sits exactly where it should

Concealing or adjusting a zip or hidden closure

Some dresses need one or two of these. Others need several. Neither is unusual — it’s simply about what your particular gown needs to fit you.

How Much Do Wedding Dress Alterations Cost?

In Auckland, bridal alterations generally range from $400 to $1,400. Yes, that’s a wide range — and there’s a good reason for it.

No two dresses are built the same way, even when they look similar on the hanger. Two satin gowns can have completely different inner construction, and two A-line dresses can have a very different number of layers to hem. The price reflects the dress in front of us, not a flat rate that ignores what’s actually involved.

Custom work sits at the higher end of that range too. Something like adding custom full sleeves isn’t a standard alteration — it calls on genuine dressmaking skill rather than adjusting what’s already there, which is part of what Alter Me is known for. If your dress needs a more bespoke touch, we’ll talk you through exactly what that involves and why, before any work begins.

Either way, you’ll never be left guessing. At your consultation, we assess your dress and give you a clear price before we start — no surprises partway through.

How Long Do Wedding Dress Alterations Take?

This is the other question on every bride’s mind, and it genuinely shapes how the rest of your planning falls into place.

Our usual turnaround is 4 weeks. During peak wedding season, demand climbs and we may need 8–12 weeks to give every bride the time her dress deserves. Outside of peak season, we can often turn alterations around in as little as 3 weeks.

We understand that isn’t always possible — life happens. For brides who need urgent help, we’ve completed alterations in as little as 3 days. Rush work like this does come at a higher cost, simply because of what it takes to prioritise and complete a dress that quickly without cutting corners.

When Should You Start the Process?

We typically see brides around  10 weeks before their wedding date  to begin alterations. If you’d like to know earlier what your dress will need, you can book a consultation months in advance — we’ll assess the dress, talk you through what’s involved, and then lock in the alteration booking closer to your date.

Most alterations don’t require multiple fittings. Once we know what your dress needs, we get on with it. The exception is if your body shape is changing in the lead-up to your wedding — in that case, we have a process for this and will talk it through with you at your consultation, so nothing is left to chance.

Your dress will be ready  2 weeks before your wedding, unless you need it sooner.
